Rainwater Catchment

Rainwater harvesting involves the collection, storage, and distribution of rainwater from the roof for use inside or outside your home or business. It is a simple concept with effective results. Rainwater is generally free from many of the common pollutants found in groundwater supply and many surface supplies. Provided certain precautions are taken, rainwater can be a safe, sustainable water source for all your water needs.

By collecting and using rainwater, you are reducing your reliance on a municipal or ground/surface water supply. You can directly contribute to living a sustainable lifestyle, while reducing the taxing effects on water infrastructure and sources. The following products can be used to maintain the quality of the water stored in your collection tanks. The more initial screening and filtration you do, the better your water will store. This becomes especially important as the turnover decreases such as with recreational property or large storage tanks.

First Flush Diverters

First flush diverters are used to discard the first batch of rain to fall, which will carry away most of the dust, pollen, and other contaminants that settle on rooftops and collect in gutters. They are generally automatic in operation.

Downpipe First Flush Water Diverters improve water quality and reduce tank maintenance by preventing the first flush of water, which may contain roof contaminants, from entering the tank. They help ensure cleaner water is available for use, which protects rainwater pumps and internal household appliances such as clothes washing machines, toilets, hot water systems, etc. Downpipe First Flush Diverters, such as the 90mm, 100mm and 150mm kits, are installed at each downpipe that supplies water to the tank. They utilize a dependable ball and seat system – a simple automatic system that does not rely on mechanical parts or manual intervention. As the water level rises in the diverter chamber, the ball floats, and once the chamber is full, the ball rests on a seat inside the diverter chamber preventing any further water entering the diverter. The subsequent flow of water is then automatically directed along the pipe system to the tank.

Features:

  • Prevents sediment, bird droppings, spiders, insects, mosquito eggs and debris from entering the rainwater tank.
  • Improves water quality, protects pumps and internal appliances.
  • Ideal to use in conjunction with a rain head.
  • Easy installation, just add pipe and glue.
  • No mechanical parts.
  • Low maintenance requirements.

The First Flush Post/Wall Stand Water Diverter is a versatile unit that can be mounted on a wall, post or stand, to hold larger volumes of water. It can be adapted to suit a wide range of applications and will manage single or multiple pipes coming from the roof to divert between 20 and 150L. The kit is easy to freight, and the diverter volume can be made on site to match exact requirements – just add the appropriate length of 300mm pipe. The kit includes a saddle and a galvanised steel wall-mounting bracket. A galvanized steel stand is an optional alternative to post or wall mounting.

Features:

  • Prevents sediment, bird droppings, spiders, insects, mosquito eggs and debris from entering the rainwater tank.
  • Improves water quality, protects pumps and internal appliances.
  • Ideal to use in conjunction with a rain head.
  • Easy installation, just add 300mm pipe length and glue
  • No mechanical parts.
  • Inlet fits 90mm pipe or 100mm female fitting.

Buried and out of sight, In-Ground Water Diverters are perfect for sloping allotments. On a site that provides the opportunity for the end cap of the diverter to be positioned above ground (to drain out and be accessible for maintenance), an In-Ground Diverter allows a ‘wet’ system to be converted into a ‘dry’ system. Most systems are ‘wet’ due to the size of buildings, and the placement of tanks away from the buildings mean that there are long runs of pipe underground leading to a riser at the tank. On a sloping site this diverter ensures the diverted water and the water that would normally remain in the pipes empties out. The result – a ‘dry’ system that improves water quality.

  • Prevents sediment, bird droppings, spiders, insects, mosquito eggs and debris from entering the rainwater tank.
  • Improves water quality, protects pumps and internal appliances.
  • Ideal to use in conjunction with a rain head.
  • Perfect for sloping properties
  • No mechanical parts.
  • Inlet fits 90mm pipe or 100mm female fitting.
  • Simple to install – just add pipe and glue.
  • Low maintenance.
  • Converts a ‘wet’ system in to a ‘dry’ system.

Emergency Systems

Looking to store water for emergency purposes in the event of a major disaster or municipal water system shutdown? Rainwater makes a simple but reliable source of backup water for emergency use. It is important to disinfect stored water for any drinking application. At the minimum you must boil the water (rolling boil for two minutes) or use another disinfection device such as Ultraviolet or Ultrafiltration. We have emergency do-it-yourself installation kits for as little as $600 plus the cost of disinfection. Small-scale UV systems can be powered from solar or UPS backup systems like those used for computers. Contact us for more ideas or setups/pricing.
