A BioSand unit installed at a ranch in rural Alberta. The red water colour in the filter is due to the very high level of iron in the water. The BioSand removes nearly all the iron and manganese from the water. The following is taken from an e-mail sent by the customer:
"I am very impressed that a sand filter can remove so much iron...On one occasion the filter was practically plugged, and I backwashed twice in a ro and it is working great again! Sue is extremely pleased with the water quality throughout the house. No more brown showers and sinks. We even use this water in the fishtank now. I certainly could not get along without this filter after seeing just what it does remove. I believe this is about as good a test as you can have for this application."
The brown water visible in the top of the BioSand unit (at left of picture) is the incoming water before treatment. After running through the BioSand, the water is clear.
