The Mainstream BioFiltration Water Treatment System

Systems sized for Residential, Livestock and Municipal applications.

Why use BioFiltration?

Biofiltration is the single most effective water treatment technology on the planet. The water treated through a Mainstream biofilter allows farms, livestock operations, acreage's and other water users to enjoy the same (or better) water quality as city municipal systems. If you enjoy the rural lifestyle but you're tired of hauling drinking water or picking up bottled water, welcome to the world of biofiltration.

Mainstream biofiltration systems have been developed over the last 14 years in collaboration with:

  • Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA)
  • The National Research Council (NRC)
  • The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC)
  • Napier University (Scotland)
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

The Mainstream Biofilter is "tried and tested" with over 14 years of continuous operation in some of the worst water conditions in Canada.

Ideal for well, lake, pond, river and dugout water.

Table of Removal Rates for Common Contaminants

The table at right shows actual test results from dugout water.

The before treatment levels were measured on January 5, 2005.

The water was run through the BioFiltration System and test taken again on May 9, 2005 (the after treatment results).

How Do Biofilters Work?

Biological water treatment uses living micro-organisms found naturally in all water sources to purify the water. The Mainstream BioSystems give these microorganisms a "home" where the untreated water flows through at a pre-determined rate. While the untreated water is making its way through the BioSystem, these microorganisms feed on the contaminants in the water. As the microorganisms populate the BioSystems, they form a highly effective water treatment system.

Each Mainstream BioSand System is a modular system and consists of up to four separate tanks (depending on model used). Each BioSand System comes with an aerated storage tank. The tank prevents water from going stale and also recirculates the water through the BioCarbon tank. This prevents oxygen depletion of the water and ensures the efficient use of the BioCarbon environment.

BioSystem Maintenance

The microorganisms are constantly growing because contaminants are continuously being digested. Eventually, an excess of microorganisms are created and they begin to slow down the water flow. This does not effect water quality, it affects only the water flow. Maintenance consists of backwashing the BioSystem to remove the excess microorganisms. Backwashing under most water conditions is required approximately once every month for BioSand and every six months for BioCarbon. The Ozone system requires only visual inspection.

BioSystem Features

  • Natural Processes are used that are tied to nature. Ideal for individuals and groups who's lifestyles and values embrace the environment
  • Innovative approaches to pre-treatment and maintenance ensure low capital outlay and low maintenance costs
  • Low Maintenance
  • System flexibility - The BioSystem Water Treatment process has a size to meet all needs. The system is modular and can easily be added to as demand for water grows
  • Reliable - The process is guaranteed for life. This system has been developed, tested and certified by government, universities and first nations groups. Ask us for verified test data.

BioSystem Prices

The Mainstream BioFiltration systems vary in price according size and components required based on water quality. Please fax us at 250-383-6990 or e-mail us a copy of your water test report and we would be happy to give you a free consultation and answer any questions you have.

BioClear 400 S (BioSand)

For treatment of Iron, Parasites, Colour, Cysts, Manganese, Arsenic, Lead, Mercury & Turbidity
The Mainstream BioFiltration Water Treatment System Model BioClear 400 S

In the BioClear 400 S system, most of the microorganisms are concentrated in the top several inches of the sand. The untreated water enters the system and by the time the water flows thorough the BioSand, most contaminants are digested by the microorganisms

Physical Specifications

  • A minimum of 30" x 33" of floor space and 7 feet of height is required for the BioSand tank
  • Water storage requires a separate 30" x 33" of floor space and 7 feet of height
  • Power Supply - 110 volt electrical outlet
  • 1.5" Waste Water Drain needed

BioClear 400 SC (BioSand & BioCarbon)

For treatment of Dissolved Organic Carbon, Tannins, Pesticides, Iron Bacteria, Colour & Odours
The Mainstream BioFiltration Water Treatment System Model BioClear 400 SC

The BioClear 400SC relies on two separate environments, BioSand and BioCarbon. BioCarbon is used in conjunction with BioSand for further treatment of problem water. BioCarbon absorbs contaminants from the water. Microorganisms then populate the outside of the carbon. The micro-organism feed on the trapped contaminants as they are released. BioCarbon works with BioSand as a complete treatment system. By providing two different treatment environments, the Mainstream BioSystem is the most efficient and effective biological water treatment system available.

Physical Specifications

  • A minimum of 62" x 33" of floor space and 7 feet of height is required for the BioSand & BioCarbon tanks
  • Water storage requires a separate 30" x 33" of floor space and 7 feet of height
  • Power Supply - 110 volt electrical outlet
  • 1.5" Waste Water Drain needed

BioClear 400 SCO (BioSand & BioCarbon with Ozone pretreatment)

For treatment of taste and odour problems and highly contaminated water sources. Used in conjunction with BioSand and BioCarbon.
The Mainstream BioFiltration Water Treatment System Model BioClear 400 SCO

The BioClear 400SCO is used for water with extremely high levels of contaminants and taste or odour problems. The Ozone pretreatment will oxidize or "break up" contaminants. If the contaminants are "cut up" by Ozone, the are more efficiently digested by the microorganisms. This allows greater contaminant loading by the BioSystem, more efficient digesting of contaminants and the ability for the system to deal with a wider range of contaminant problems.

Physical Specifications

  • A minimum of 62" x 33" of floor space and 7 feet of height is required for the BioSand & BioCarbon tanks
  • Water storage requires a separate 30" x 33" of floor space and 7 feet of height
  • Ozone system requires a separate 30" x 33" of floor space and 7 feet of height
  • Power Supply - 110 volt electrical outlet
  • 1.5" Waste Water Drain needed
