Whole House City Water Purification Packages |
|
Most of us never give a second thought to the quality of our water and how it affects our health. Above and beyond the unpleasant taste and odour of chlorine often found in city water, we trust that it is safe for our families to drink. Most Canadian municipal water systems only test for and act on ONE possible contaminant - fecal bacteria. Other contaminants commonly found in city water systems can include lead, copper, aluminum, parasites, other types of bacteria and more. |

Chlorine in Your Water Not only does removing the chlorine improve the taste and smell of your water, but there are health benefits as well. Trihalomethanes (THM's) are formed when chlorine reacts with organic material (such as algae) present in the water. Two of the most common THM's produced are chloroform and boroform. Studies have shown that THM's are a direct link to an increased chance of developing some cancers, causing birth defects and even miscarriages. We know drinking chlorine may be hazardous for us, but what about showering in it? Documented scientific studies conclude that taking hot showers can be a health risk. In the enclosed shower stall, chlorine vaporizes and is inhaled and absorbed through your skin. Showering in chlorinated water may also cause pre-existing conditions, such as asthma and eczema, to worsen. Symptoms of chlorine exposure in the shower are dry and/or flaking skin, dry brittle hair and red irritated eyes. Filtering the shower water reduces these symptoms. Skin and hair feel softer and eyes become less red and irritated. |

Staining Do you have green or blue stains in your bathtub drain or a reddish tinge to your sink? It might be from the copper of your pipes being dissolved as your water passes through them. Or from rust in the pipes. The dissolved copper passes directly into your water supply, which can have a detrimental effect on your health, not to mention your plumbing! As the water dissolves the copper pipes, they will thin over time and can result in costly repair bills to fix the leaks in your piping. At right: Pipes from a commercial building in downtown Victoria, BC. The reddish stain is rust build-up that will eventually plug the pipes. |

Bacterial Contamination Contamination of municipal water by bacteria happens more than most people realize. At any given time, there are over 300 boil water advisories in BC. With the sampling and testing procedures in place today, there is always a lag time between when a contamination takes place and when the boil water advisory is given. In some cases advisory is never made public. |

Above: A comparison between clean and dirty filter cartridges. The center filter is the colour of the filters before use. The filter on the right was removed from a reverse osmosis unit after 6 months of operation. The large filter on the right was also removed after 6 months of use from a whole house system. Both systems are in homes in Victoria, BC. The colour is from dirt and algae common in Victoria and other city water systems. |
