Biosand Gravity Operated Water Filters

Slow sand filtration is a biological process that cleans water much the way the sandy bed of a river cleans and recharges an aquifer. A column of water passes through a layer of fine sand at the rate of 0.1 gallons (0.38 liters) per minute per square foot or less. On the top of the sand, an intense layer of microbes naturally develops. This layer lives by consuming whatever is passing through in the water. In a slow sand filter, this layer, called the schmutzdecke, is responsible for removing up to 99.99% of all bacteria, viruses, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and parasites through predation. As the water passes through the deeper layers, other processes such as sedimentation, mechanical filtration, and electrical attraction remove still more. The result is that slow sand filters may be the best stand alone water filters known.

SSF/x 1800 (1.25 GPM / 1,800 GPD)

• The patented and highly acclaimed SSF/x 1800 provides up to 1800 gallons per day, enough for two or more families. This filter provides all the features of our larger filters, including long filter runs, easy harrowing cleaning, and simple flow control. These features make it possible for any homeowner to install, operate and maintain a slow sand filter without expensive ongoing material costs.

SSF-1.25 (1.25 GPM / 1,800 GPD)

• Slow sand filtration offers a cost-effective approach to water treatment where surface water is the source and bacteria, Giardia, Cryptosporidium and turbidity are the problems. Small-community sized slow sand filters producing from 1800 gpd to 14,400 gpd and up, using extra heavy-duty polyethylene roto-moulded components. Additional output can be achieved through installing multiple units in parallel. These units can be installed in a matter of days without specialized tools or equipment at a fraction of the cost of concrete or steel.
